consumer corner - what are your rights?

 

GENERAL SCOPE AND PURPOSE

Consumer Corner is a medium through which BARP members can be advised of their rights as a consumer. It will provide guidance and also it will inform the membership of advocacy initiatives on their behalf.

Consumer Corner shall seek to:

(a) develop clear policies and procedures to support complaints made by BARP’s membership about goods and service provision;

(b) liaise with the relevant government agencies on matters concerning consumer protection;

(c) educate consumers of their rights under the laws of Barbados;

(d) collaborate with a range of agencies to ensure consumer protection;

(e) promote the use of complaints procedures as per the relevant legislation;

(f) monitor the number of complaints received about a service provider as well as resolved complaints;

(g) explore the role of the Ombudsman to ensure that complaints made about government services are efficiently addressed;

(h) explore alternate dispute resolution as a means of settling consumer complaints;

A: Special parking permits for vehicles transporting persons with disabilities are being issued by the Barbados Council for the Disabled. Applications can be submitted via fax, mail, or online. You may either download the application form below or complete it online. Please note that a doctor's certificate must accompany the completed application form.

Q: How does a Taxpayer qualify for the Pensioner Rebate?

A: The taxpayer must satisfy all of the following conditions;

    1. The individual must be sixty years or over and the Owner of the property, and;

    2. The individual must be in receipt of a pension at the 1st of April for the year to which it applies, and;

    3. The individual must be normally resident in Barbados for at least 180 consecutive days in a calendar year.

The Taxpayer is only entitled to this benefit for one residence only.  In addition, a Barbados Identification Card or Barbados Passport, and a pension voucher or certificate of eligibility from Pension Plan Administrator must be presented.

Note 2

A pensioner shall pay tax at the rate specified but the actual amount payable shall be 40% of the tax demanded, but no such reduction shall be permitted unless the land in respect of which the tax is levied is owned by the pensioner and has a dwelling house thereon; and the dwelling house is used exclusively by the pensioner and his immediate family for their permanent habitation.
