BARP CHARITABLE TRUST OFFERING $10,000 ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDIES ON AGEING
BRIDGETOWN (Friday, September 13, 2018)– As Barbados celebrates Senior Citizens Month in September, and we look towards the United Nations International Day of Older Persons on October 1, 2018, the charitable arm of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) is urging more Barbadians to pursue studies in areas such as Geriatrics and Gerontology.
The BARP Charitable Trust is doing more than talking. It is encouraging academic study in an area that will benefit older persons, such as those who are members of BARP. Therefore it is offering an annual scholarship to nationals of Barbados pursuing full-time post-graduate studies related to ageing at the University of the West Indies (UWI). The scholarship is tenable for one academic year, and the value is BDS$10,000.
Globally, there are currently 700 million people over the age of 60, and this figure is expected to rise to 2 billion by 2050. In Barbados, it is projected that by 2050 between 25 and 33 percent of the Barbados population will be aged 65 and over.
Chairman of the BARP Charitable Trust, Justice Elneth Kentish, says, “Given these statistics, careers in areas dealing with the elderly should be regarded as growth areas. This is precisely what the Trust is trying to encourage with the offer of a scholarship aimed at generating research in matters relating to ageing. So far, we have been able to award two scholarships. It would be really unfortunate if our scholarship funds are not taken advantage of.”
The BARP Charitable Trust Scholarship is administered by the UWI. Applicants should contact the School for Graduate Studies and Research, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
