Within days of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) launched an appeal for funds to help the victims of this terrible disaster.  The response from BARP members was immediate and overwhelming.

In the following weeks, BARP President, Ernest Batson, was concerned that in these tough economic times, there may have been BARP members who would like to contribute to the fund, but felt that a dollar or two, which was all they could afford, would not be worth giving.  As every single dollar really does count, BARP launched its Single Dollar Appeal, knowing that if every single BARP member was to contribute just one dollar, the Association would be able to make a substantial contribution to the relief effort and all BARP members would have been able to participate.

Whilst many BARP members were also supporting other relief efforts in Barbados, the Association was most impressed by the large numbers of BARP members who responded to the Single Dollar Appeal and brought their contributions to the BARP office - from a single dollar, to many hundreds of dollars.

The Association was therefore delighted to ask its Vice-President, Norma Roach, to present to Director General of the Barbados Red Cross Society, Edmond Bradshaw, for their Haiti Earthquake Appeal, a cheque in the sum of $22,679, which represents the number of people who are currently members of BARP.

In her speech, Mrs. Roach thanked, for their generosity and support, all those BARP members who contributed to the fund and pointed out that it shows what BARP can achieve when its members all come together.
