Minister of Health and Wellness, Lt. Colonel Jeffrey Bostic, and Acting Chief Medical Officer, Anton Best, update the press on COVID-19. (BGIS)

The World Health Organization, on Tuesday, March 17, recommended that persons suffering with COVID-19 symptoms avoid taking Ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anton Best, speaking at a press conference at Ilaro Court today, noted that the Ministry was alerted to the fact that in some places where NSAIDs were used, patients worsened.

He said: “Right now, the recommendation is to focus on the use of paracetamol for pain and for fever reduction, as opposed to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Ibuprofen, Voltaren, Cataflam and other drugs in that category [such as] aspirin.”

Barbadians are being advised to avoid using products containing Ibuprofen if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.  According to the Barbados Drug Service, over-the-counter Ibuprofen products are:

Group Health FAQs March 2020

  • Why can't I pay in advance at SurePay in March? +

SurePay does not have any information as it relates to BARP Members for May 2020 payments (not allowed to pay for May or any other future months) SurePay is currently only accepting payments on outstanding balances until March 31st; therefore, anyone who is currently receiving an error at SurePay means their account is up to date.
  • When can I pay premiums or pay in advance? +

Please be advised , Effective April 1, payments will be accepted with respect to the renewal and members will be able to pay in advance if they wish after April 1, 2020. Also, persons who wish to pay in advance now can pay Gallagher either through the drop down menu on RBC or as a Third Party payment on all other banks.
  • Does sure pay facilitate online payments for the BARP members? +

SurePay unfortunately at this time does not extend its online payment option to BARP Members.
  • Will a grace period be implemented for those members who cannot leave their homes (COVID-19 Measures/Fears) or have no means of making online payments? +

In light of the current situation the country faces with COVID-19 and the anticipated restrictions that will be imposed as matters develop, note that we spoke to insurers who are fully aware and have communicated their willingness to work with us the broker and the members of BARP during this ordeal. Insurers understand the situation is a fluid one which may therefore require the panel to revisit their position and/or decisions as the situation evolves/progress. At this stage, both insurers and the Gallagher team are encouraging that members consider using the online payment option, through Gallagher Payee option on RBC Royal Bank or Gallagher online Third Party transfers for all other banks to facilitate payment of premiums where it may be difficult to utilize any of the other payment options available, or, where certain restrictions imposed by the authorities will pose a challenge.

Notwithstanding, do note if the online option is not possible in your case, that insurers are happy to extend the payment deadline to May 31st, pending further updates from the authorities. At that point, should developments pose a further problem or restrictions remain in place, a further extension will be contemplated and communicated. Kindly note that members will be held covered during this time.
