BARP Charitable Trust Board of TrusteesBoard of Trustees: Seated (l-r), Teresa Marshall, Elneth Kentish, Jean Springer, Joan Crawford. Standing (l-r), Clyde 'CQ' Williams, Lindell Nurse, Sharon Marshall, Robert Williams and Rev. Clayton Springer.

The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) has established a charitable trust to fulfil the growing demands for financial assistance from its members.

Incorporation of a charitable trust enables BARP to seek donations from corporate bodies, organisations and individuals for this purpose. Those individuals and entities can now benefit from tax deductions for their donations to the BARP Charitable Trust. Since the establishment of the Trust, the PAF has been restyled as the Personal Assistance Committee (PAC), which now reports to the Board of Trustees.

The Trust also administers the BARP Charitable Trust Scholarship, which is open to nationals of Barbados pursuing full-time post-graduate studies related to ageing at UWI. It encourages academic study in an area that will benefit older persons. The scholarship is tenable for one academic year, and the value is BDS$10,000.

Retired High Court judge, Justice Elneth Kentish, is chair of the BARP Charitable Trust. Former permanent secretary, Ms. Teresa Marshall, is vice-chairman; chartered accountant, Mr. Lindell Nurse is treasurer; and retired computer manager, Mr. Robert Williams, is secretary to the Trust. Insurance executive, Mr. Clyde ‘CQ’ Williams; Director of the Child Care Board, Ms. Joan Crawford; retired matron, Ms. Jean Springer; and communications consultant, Dr. Sharon Marshall are the other Trustees.

Wesleyan pastor, Rev. Clayton Springer, is chair of the Personal Assistance Committee. With the establishment of the Trust, applications for assistance are once again being accepted by the committee. BARP members must have been in good standing for the last three consecutive years in order to benefit from this assistance. Application forms are available at the BARP office, Mervue House, Marine Gardens, Hastings.
