I feel deeply honoured to be given the opportunity to serve BARP in the capacity of President for the ensuing year. It is with some trepidation that I undertake this most important position as leader of this august institution. Given the high standards and achievements of our past leadership, I clearly understand my charge to build on the successes of the past and position BARP to overcome the many challenges which are before it and prepare for a great and sustainable future.
Since 1995, this organization has grown exponentially from small beginnings managed by highly talented and competent volunteers to a present membership of over thirty-three thousand members expanding at an average rate of 300 new members per month. The administrative requirements of satisfying such a burgeoning membership can no longer be as efficiently implemented purely through a voluntaristic system.
The Board of BARP, recognizing the value of the contributions made by volunteers and being cognizant of the need to significantly improve the delivery of service to members, have opted for a hybrid system of operation where the outstanding work of the various committees continue to be organized and led by our trusted volunteers while the burden of the administrative work of BARP be undertaken by paid administrators. To this end, BARP is recruiting suitable personnel to fill the newly created posts identified in the strategic plan as agreed to by the Board of Directors.
We expect a truly exciting time in BARP as we execute our plans for the enhancement of our present location which will provide additional safety and comfort for our Staff and volunteers: The computer system and program upgrade which will allow for better collection; storage and analysis of data; finalizing our plans regarding Reverse Mortgages; forging alliances with partners who will bring additional value to our members; and stepping up our advocacy on all matters which impact our members’ quality of life.
It would be remiss of me if I did not take this opportunity to thank outgoing President Ernest Batson for the sterling contribution he has made to this organization first as a member of the Board, then Vice President and finally President where he successfully led the organization for the past three years.
Ernest, on behalf of the entire membership of BARP, I extend a sincere thank you for a job well done.
